The Oscar Knox Fund has been given a huge boost after just over £30,000 was raised in one day at the annual Oscar Knox Cup golf event held earlier this month.

Supported by SPAR Northern Ireland for the second year, the golf day was enjoyed by 160 golfers including local retailers, hoteliers and sports stars, followed by a two course dinner, prize giving and evening of entertainment hosted by broadcaster Stephen Clements.

Snooker champ Mark Allen and boxers Michael and Jamie Conlan took to the greens in unsurprisingly competitive fashion, while Belfast retailer Chris Suitor also took to the decks later in the evening making his DJing debut for the charity.  The cup was eventually won by Carrickmore quartet Cathal Donaghy, Benny McLaughlin, Conal McGarrity and Conor McNulty.

Wilsons Auctions managed the live auction, which included items of signed sporting memorabilia from stars such as Rory McIlroy, Shane Lowry and Ronnie O’Sullivan, which alone raised over £12,500.

Bronagh Luke, Head of Corporate Marketing at Henderson Wholesale which owns the SPAR brand in Northern Ireland said the event was hugely supported and enjoyed by all; “Now in its fourth year, the Oscar Knox Cup just keeps getting better. Stephen and Leona did an incredible job organising the entire day from start to finish, and it’s a testament to them and their son Oscar just how widely supported the event and the Oscar Knox Fund is.

“To raise over £30,000 in one day is just fantastic. It brings the total of all four events since 2016 to over £90,000. What a legacy for Wee Oscar.”

Stephen Knox added; “What an incredible day, definitely the biggest and best Oscar Knox Cup yet.  Without the support of our partners like SPAR NI, we simply wouldn’t be able to pull this event off. Huge thanks to all our sponsors, golfers, supporters and to Fortwilliam Golf Club.  We are very proud of everything that has been done and will continue to be done in Oscar’s name to help in the fight against childhood cancer.”
