SPAR NI, partner of the Deep River Rock Belfast City Marathon for the first time this year, has announced it will bring its successful SPAR Sports Club initiative to Northern Ireland for the first time on 5th May.

The SPAR Sports Club was created as part of SPAR’s sponsorship of British Athletics and has been enjoyed by over 4,000 track and field fans at the SPAR British Athletics National Indoors, Muller Indoor Grand Prix and the European Athletics Indoor Championships in the past few months.

The initiative will now be part of the finish line hub and celebrations at Ormeau Park during the marathon event on Sunday 5th May.

Visitors and supporters can take the opportunity to test their athleticism during the Speed Challenge to try and beat the elites’ speed on the track, via a treadmill. Participants can also warm up with the Speed Bounce Challenge where they will have 20 seconds to complete as many jumps as possible.

Bronagh Luke, Head of Corporate Marketing says SPAR NI’s partnership of the Deep River Rock Belfast City Marathon is a natural next step for the brand; “SPAR is committed to bringing communities together and creating enjoyable, family experiences which can be seen from our continued support of the SPAR Craic 10K and SPAR Omagh Half Marathon. We’re delighted to have the brand partner with the event and to bring even more engaging ideas and activities to a packed, family day of fun.”

Ciaran Haren, part of the team at Henderson Group which owns the SPAR brand in Northern Ireland is part of the Experiment 26.2 Group, set up by Marathon organisers to help, support and watch 19 people cross the finish line.

There will also be 20 staff from the Group’s Headquarters in Mallusk taking part on the day.

For the first time, SPAR NI will also provide vital fuel stations along the route. Bronagh continued; “Runners can pick up orange segments and handfuls of jelly beans along Lisburn Road and Ormeau Road to give them an extra boost of energy along the way.”

The Deep River Rock Belfast City Marathon takes place on Sunday 5th May and the new route for 2019 starts at Stormont, finishing at Ormeau Park alongside the Team Relay, 9 Mile Walk and the Fun Run.
