Henderson Retail, the locally owned retailer which operates 115 SPAR and EUROSPAR stores in Northern Ireland, has announced a £2.4m expansion of SPAR Silverwood will begin in April.

The store, which was acquired by the company in 2024, will be developed into a community supermarket under the EUROSPAR brand, enhancing its shopping experience for the local community, while bringing additional services and products to the area.

12 new full time and part time roles will be created with the expansion, with recruitment taking place locally, reflecting the company’s commitment to supporting employment within the communities it serves.

Work will expand the store to 4,800 sq. ft., and will complete  by the end of the year.

Henderson Group Retail Director, George Rankin commented; “The expansion of SPAR Silverwood into a EUROSPAR supermarket not only brings a wider product range, value and additional services on our neighbours’ doorsteps, but also brings opportunity to the area with the creation of new jobs.

“Our current team of local staff will continue within the business, bringing the total number within the store to 40 after we welcome our new team members.”

The investment will see the expansion of the store’s food to go offering, introducing the popular Delish Deli breakfast and lunch options served throughout the day. A new local range of butchery products will be available, while shoppers will benefit from EUROSPAR’s value proposition, Tesco Price Match, driving down the price of hundreds of everyday essentials.

Since the store converted to a SPAR in 2024, staff have supported many clubs and charities in their local community, including Oxford Sunnyside Football Club’s girls junior team with kit sponsorship, while also raising over £3,500 in the past year for various charities including SPAR’s charity partner Marie Curie, NI Chest, Heart & Stroke, Air Ambulance, Action Mental Health, Cancer Fund for Children and MacMillan Cancer Support.

Mr Rankin concluded; “This community support will only grow as our store expands, with even more commitment to the organisations, charities, clubs and community groups that need support and that matter to our shoppers and our staff.”
