SPAR Northern Ireland has announced they will return as the title sponsor of The Oscar Knox Cup for the second year, joining a host of local TV and sports stars to take on Fortwilliam Golf Club on Friday 06 September.

The retailer came on board in 2018 to support the event which was established by wee Oscar Knox’s parents, Leona and Stephen, in memory of Oscar who died in 2014 aged just 5.

In the past three years, the high-profile charity golf day which gains the support of many local celebrities and sports stars each year, has raised an incredible £57,564 for the Oscar Knox Fund at Solving Kids’ Cancer.

SPAR in Northern Ireland came on board to provide extra support for the event which continues to fundraise for research and treatments to ensure more effective diagnosis and treatment options for those living with childhood cancer.

Bronagh Luke, Head of Corporate Marketing said; “The work and support that the Oscar Knox Fund provides is so important, and we are delighted to return for a second year and throw all our support behind the Golf Day.

“We have two teams of our own taking part, and we look forward to a really special day of remembering Oscar, as well as raising vital funds in his memory.”

Oscar’s Mum Leona Knox said; “Childhood cancer research is massively underfunded, which is delaying the discovery of more effective and less toxic treatments to help children just like Oscar. Only 4 in 10 children diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma are alive five years after diagnosis. That is simply not good enough. Far too many families are being devastated in the same way that ours has been.

“Together with Solving Kids’ Cancer, we are working towards a day where no child dies of neuroblastoma and no child suffers due to its treatment. All money raised at our golf day goes to the Oscar Knox Fund which is something we are extremely passionate about and will be used to fund research into this horrendous disease that took Oscar from us. We are so grateful to our sponsors, golfers and to Fortwilliam Golf Club for all of their support.”

Oscar’s Dad Stephen said “We are so happy to have SPAR NI return as Title Sponsor for the Oscar Knox Cup 2019. It makes us very proud to have the support of such a well-known brand, and to see it growing year on year and raising such huge sums for neuroblastoma research makes all the hard work worthwhile.”

The Oscar Knox Cup is due to feature a number of celebrity golfers including boxers Carl Frampton, Paddy Barnes, Michael and Jamie Conlan, Conrad Cummings, as well as Antrim snooker star Mark Allen, and entertainer John Linehan.
