The 10th outing of the Mallusk 5-Mile Road Race will be sponsored by local coffee and hot drinks brand, Barista Bar, it has been announced.

The Race, which will take place on Friday 04 August throughout the Newtownabbey village of Mallusk, will honour those who take on the race each year, with every runner achieving Legendary Status upon completion of the race, in celebration of the event’s Legends theme for 2023.

A total of 350 runners will take on the Race this year, infamous for its steep 1.5 mile incline from the start line, and which has seen registration grow by 288% since the first outing in 2014.

Alex Davidson of the Mallusk Harriers Athletic Club, who organise and host the Race each year, says the event could simply not run without such sponsorship; “The Mallusk 5-Mile Road Race is our biggest event of the year, and it takes a huge amount of effort from all of our club and volunteers to make it as successful as it has been since we began in 2014.

“Barista Bar is a local brand operated right in the heart of Mallusk at Henderson Foodservice, part of the Henderson Group, so having that local support makes a huge difference in the running of our Race. We wouldn’t be able to run these events without our sponsors, and to have the added value of incentives gifted to us by Barista Bar to offer our entrants to make it the sell-out event it is each year is priceless.”

Each runner of the Race will receive a branded Barista Bar sports bag and a voucher to avail of a free Barista Bar hot drink from SPAR MALLUSK, a bespoke finisher ‘Legendary Status’ medal, a Buff neckwear, and are invited to enjoy the event’s post-race catering. Podium placed winners will receive a cash prize, while there are also age category prizes to be won.

Keavy O’Mahony-Truesdale, Barista Bar Brand Manager at Henderson Foodservice says  it’s important for the brand to support local initiatives; “Whilst we offer our hot drinks across Northern Ireland, we are very proud to be based in Mallusk and recently opened our first ever Barista Bar Drive Thru at the all-new SPAR Mallusk Road.

“We make every effort to support local businesses, community groups and initiatives such as the Mallusk Harriers and their 5-Mile Road Race. The event is one for the whole community, and not only provides a safe and exciting event for runners and their friends and families, but also raises money for local charities. We wish the Mallusk Harriers all the best for a successful event, and look forward to meeting all the runners on the night.”

The Mallusk Harriers will make a donation from the proceeds of the race to Pulmonary Fibrosis NI, a local charity committed to supporting patients, their families and carers to improve quality of life and raise awareness of the condition. The Mallusk Harriers have raised £3,000 for the charity so far this year.
